Postgame Quotes: vs. Tulane
February 01, 2019 | Men's Basketball
ECU Head Coach Joe Dooley
Opening Statement
"I thought especially in the second half, after we got in a little rhythm and played out of some foul trouble, the guys did a nice job competing. Sometimes we can't stand prosperity when we start to play well, we take a quick shot or try and make a home run play, opposed to easy plays. But I thought when things weren't going well, we settled down, made some plays, guys stepped up. Good basketball plays enabled us to win the game."
Â
On Jayden Gardner getting into foul trouble early and overcoming that in the second half
"They went after him early in the game, we had a ton of hand-checking fouls that we have to pay better attention to the scouting report because we put them in the bonus because we were jamming drivers and got a little strung out early. But he played through it, the guys got him the ball and he made some passes out of the post that were really good passes."
Â
On KJ Davis hitting three straight 3s when he hasn't been shooting well
"Cold spell? It's more like a glacier. He made some big shots. If we can make some 3s, the floor will widen. And we work on it and work on it and we will continue to work on it. Those were timely 3s and got us off the schneid a little bit."
Â
On scoring 23 points off 16 turnovers
"That was the difference in the game. We got eight more shots even though we didn't shoot it well. We only gave up one offensive rebound in the second half, gave up 10 in the first half. I don't think our guys thought Tulane was as long as they are, they were a lot taller us. Â Even when you box out you go get the ball and create space and we didn't do that in the first half. But the lack of turnovers was big for us tonight."
Â
On snapping the losing streak
"It's not been easy losing, but it's not like we haven't been working. We have played well in spurts, it's like a tale of two games. We've played well for 18, 22, 23 minutes, but we have to be able to sustain and some of that is immaturity, some of that's depth. When you are not a great shooting team, it puts stress on your defense."
On Dimitrije's recent play:
"He's playing great the last couple of games. He's went after the ball today and rebound the ball. You know when you throw the ball inside he knows what he's doing and its good to see him because he works, he's great kid, and its great seeing him rewarded."
Senior Isaac Fleming
On team's defense:
"It was just staying locked in and sticking to the game plan. The whole game coach was telling us they don't like pressure so really just pressuring them and just and capitalizing and not giving up, easy points."
Â
Freshman Jayden Gardner
On getting a win again:
"It feels great. It feels like it's been a year. We fought back tonight. KJ made some big shots, he played really well and tied it back. Everybody contributed tonight so that was nice to see."
Â
On having to sit with two fouls in the first half:
"It was rough man. It was tough, I just have to support the team and they hung in there. We had three guys with two fouls, so it was nice to see Isaac and Seth, and Dimitrije carry the load. We hung in there and in the second half we came back and we all fought as a team and won the game."
