
Whitaker Wins Long Jump Silver At AAC Indoor Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Sophomore Mackenzie Whitaker claimed the silver medal in the long jump to highlight the ECU track and field program's participating in day one of the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Following four scored events, the women are seventh with 18 points while the men are eighth with 10 points.

Whitaker cleared 5.87 meters, outpacing Tanalaya Gordon of Memphis and Devin D'Oliveira of UCF who posted identical 5.85-meter marks. Samiyah Samuels of Houston took the gold by jumping 6.18 meters.

Sophomore Sommer Knight finished fourth in the pole vault with mark of 3.99 meters as Rebekah Markel of Tulane snatched the top spot by clearing a meet-record 4.23 meters. Senior Grace Sullivan scored for the Pirates in the mile, finishing fifth in a time of 4:58.30 while junior Nuria Tillo-Prats was seventh in a time of 4:57.99. Freshman Anna Bristle was sixth in the 5,000m, crossing the finish line in 17:00.22. Advancing to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles was sophomore Brooke Stith who ended up fifth in the prelims after turning in a time of 8.58.

On the men's side, senior Nick Ciaccia was fifth in the 5,000m in a time of 14:36.67. Classmate Hakeem Horton took fourth in the long jump with an effort of 7.32 meters.

The second and final day of the championships commences in earnest Saturday morning at 10:45 a.m. with the men's high jump trials and final.
