Pirates Sweep Coastal Carolina 4-0
February 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – Despite rain forcing the match to be played indoors, the ECU women's tennis team made short work of Coastal Carolina, winning 4-0 on Friday afternoon inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
"Even though the matches looks one sided, the individual matches were not," said head coach Tom Morris. "The doubles went a long way and even in number one singles and number three singles, we were at four-all in the first set. They don't make a lot of mistakes, they make you earn everything you get. We knew we had to battle and we know we're going to have a similar situation tomorrow."
ECU (5-2) has now won five straight matches since opening the season 0-2. It is also the first time the Pirates have beaten the Chanticleers since the 2014-15 season.
The Pirates used the doubles point to springboard themselves into an early lead. ECU took early leads on courts one and two, with court two reaching six games first. Celia Ruiz and Minette Van Vreden topped Somer Dalla-Bona and Viktorija Demcenkova 6-2 on court two to open the match. Lisa Hofbauer and Alisa Diercksen were right behind them, topping Jennifer Brown and Jessie Mount 6-2 on court one. ECU was on the way to a win on all three courts, as Hsia Ho Chiao and Nastja Rettich had overturned an early deficit and were leading 5-3 on court three when the point was clinched.
Due to the move indoors, ECU's top three players took the courts first. Ruiz shot out of the gate, winning her first set against Dalla-Bona. Hofbauer and Diercksen had tighter first sets, as both were tied 4-4. Each came through in the clutch though and won 6-4.
In the second set, all three Pirates took early leads and never looked back. Ruiz was the first to finish her match, beating Dalla-Bona 6-2, 6-2 on court two. Hofbauer beat Demcenkova 6-4, 6-1 on court one. The match came to a close when Diercksen closed out a 6-4, 6-2 win over Brown on court three.
ECU will have another home match this weekend, taking on UNC Greensboro on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., inside the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
