Women's Tennis Dominates Tulane 4-1
February 08, 2019 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS, LA. – After a two-week layoff, the ECU women's tennis team collected its first win of the season by topping Tulane 4-1 on Friday afternoon at the Park City Tennis Center.
"This was an extremely hard fought win for our team," said head coach Tom Morris. "Tulane is a very good program and played a solid match. I'm proud of the way we battled today to get the win after falling behind after doubles."
ECU (1-2) just missed clinching the doubles point. Tulane (4-3) struck first when Laura Fabrizi and Daniela La Fuente beat Celia Ruiz and Minette Van Vreden 6-4 on court two. The Pirates evened the match after Nastja Rettich and Hsia Ho Chiao topped Alex Alegre and Adelaide Lavery 6-4 on court three. The Pirates had a chance to take the point when the No. 49-ranked pairing of Alisa Diercksen and Lisa Hofbauer were tied with Ivone Alvaro and Elena Mueller 5-5 on court one, but the Green Wave duo won the final two games to clinch their match.
Down, but not out, the Pirates attacked singles play with a vengeance. Hofbauer won the first point of the season for ECU when the junior beat Fabrizi in straight sets on court one. ECU took a 2-1 lead thanks to Diercksen topping Alvaro 6-3, 6-4 on court three.
The next point for ECU was a very welcome one. Ruiz a three-time All-AAC selection who had played just three matches between the fall and spring seasons due to injury, won her first dual match of 2019 by beating Muller 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
ECU closed out its first win of the spring when Van Vreden beat Christina Sisti 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 on court five.
The Pirates return to the courts on Sunday afternoon against Memphis. First serve is slated for 12 noon at the Park City Tennis Center.
