ECU Starts Trip With 7-0 Win Over Birmingham Southern
March 02, 2019 | Women's Tennis
Orlando, Fla. – With five matches crammed into three days, the ECU women's tennis team showed its depth as the Pirates beat Birmingham Southern 7-0 on Saturday afternoon.
"Our players continue to play very solid," said head coach Tom Morris. "Today we had the opportunity to substitute a few of our players who are dealing with some overuse issues and we saw Hsia, Annija, Victoria and Sofia all come through with solid wins. We also saw our two freshman (Minette and Martina) play and win at No. 1 and No. 2 singles with great results. Today was a very good day for our program!"
All three doubles pairs ECU used on Saturday were playing their first matches together this season. On court three, Sofia Anthony and Martina Paladini-Jennings dropped just one game against Emily Enoch and Harper Anderson, winning 6-1. Hsia Ho Chiao and Victoria Dixon were even better on court two, beating Lexie Dillard and Ashton Henderson 6-0.
In singles, three of the six Pirates were playing in a dual match for the first time this season. The inexperience did not hold them back as ECU lost just six total games during the six first sets.
Chiao was the first to finish her match, blanking Enoch 6-0, 6-0 on court three. Annija Veinsteina also won 6-0, 6-0, beating Dillard on court four.
Minette Van Vreden got the clinching point by beating Anderson 6-1, 6-2 on court two. Her classmate, Paladini-Jennings, got her first win on the top court by beating Isabella Wisener 6-1, 6-1.
Dixon and Anthony both got their first dual match victories of the season. Dixon beat Ansley Turley 6-3, 6-1 on court five while Anthony topped Margaret Zaner 6-1, 6-4 on court six.
ECU will play a pair of matches on Sunday. First up will be an 11:30 a.m., match against Grand Valley State followed by a 3 p.m., match against North Carolina Wesleyan.
