April 26, 2019 | General
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina junior first baseman Spencer Brickhouse and senior distance runner Grace Sullivan have been named ECU's Most Outstanding Male and Female Scholar-Athletes for the 2018-19 academic year. The duo will be honored at the 30th Annual Breakfast of Champions Saturday morning, April 27, at the Murphy Center.
Â
The award, presented by Nutrien, is considered the most prestigious honor that is conferred annually to a male and female student-athlete at ECU. The award recognizes academic achievement, qualities of leadership and service to the university and community.
Â
Brickhouse has played in more than 150 games, hit over 30 home runs and driven in more than 100 runs during his first two-plus seasons at ECU. He was named to a trio of Freshman All-America teams as a rookie. The following year, he was a First-Team All-American Athletic Conference selection as well as the Most Outstanding Player of the 2018 AAC Baseball Championship, helping ECU claim its second conference tournament title.Â
Â
A mechanical engineering major, Brickhouse is a two-time member of The American All-Academic Team and the ECU Dean's List, as well as a three-time member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. He has accumulated more than 300 hours of community service, aiding in hurricane relief efforts and volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House among many other activities.
Â
"Being an East Carolina student-athlete is an honor that every student-athlete should take seriously," Brickhouse said. "I have made lifelong friends with my experiences at East Carolina and have had an experience that I will forever cherish."
A four-year member of the ECU women's cross country and track and field teams, Sullivan is a four-time all-conference performer and three-year team captain. She holds school records in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, while ranking second on the school's fastest times chart in the 6,000-meter run as well as the indoor mile.
Â
Sullivan, a public health studies major, is a four-time member of the United States Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Team in addition to earning ECU Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll distinction three times. She has amassed over 200 hours of community service, volunteering to assist with such organizations as Aces for Autism and Riley's Army.
Â
