
Pirates Earn Pair Of Silver Medals At AAC Outdoor Championships

WICHITA, Kan. – Seniors Grace Sullivan and Hakeem Horton posted the first podium finishes for East Carolina at the AAC Outdoor Championships Saturday, claiming second place in the steeplechase and long jump respectively.

The women are in sixth place with 19 points entering the final day of the meet Sunday while the men are in seventh place with 16 points.
Sullivan turned in a time of 10:21.32 in the steeplechase, just seven seconds behind winner Rebekah Topham of Wichita State. Horton cleared 7.48 meters on his last attempt to snag an all-conference spot.

In the other field events, sophomore Mackenzie Whitaker and sophomore Brooke Stith took fifth and sixth place in the long jump with respective marks of 5.91 and 5.88 meters. Senior Evan McCracken was fifth in the shot put with a throw of 17.02 meters.

On the track, Stith and senior Naomi Whitaker advanced to the finals of the 100-meter hurdles by notching qualifying times of 13.91 and 13.95. Junior Nuria Tillo-Prats finished second in her heat of the 1500-meter run prelims, crossing the finish line in 4:32.77 to grab a spot in the finals.

The heptathlon was also completed Saturday and junior Bria Stith ended in fifth place with a total of 4,956 points.

Championship Sunday begins at 3:30 p.m. with the start of the men's high jump, women's triple jump and women's discus.
