JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior Hakeem Horton and sophomore Mackenzie Whitaker both looked to book a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships Thursday at the NCAA East Preliminary, but both student-athletes fell just short of advancement in the long jump.
Â
Horton posted a strong mark of 7.48 meters, but ended up in 15th place – just three spots shy of advancing to the national meet as the top 12 in each event moved on. Horton matched his outdoor best total which he also set at the American Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships to earn the silver medal and all-conference honors. Whitaker finished a respectable 21st place, posting a mark of 5.95 meters.
Â
The Pirates will have four members of the program compete in Friday's event slate – Brooke Stith (100m hurdles), Grace Sullivan (3,000-meter steeplechase), Kourtney Edwards-Campbell (discus) and Sommer Knight (pole vault).
Â
The meet is taking place at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida.
