Pirates Set To Tee It Up At Rod Myers Invitational

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The ECU men's golf team is set for their second tournament appearance of the season as they tee it up in the Rod Myers Invitational, hosted by Duke University on Saturday and Sunday.
The 13-team field features five squads that finished in the final top 30 Golfstat rankings last season: No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 15 Duke, No. 22 Liberty, No. 23 North Carolina and No. 30 Louisville. Charlotte, Cincinnati, Nebraska, Penn State, Princeton, Toledo and UNCG will also be competing this weekend.

The tournament opens on Saturday, Sept. 14, with a 7:35 a.m. start. Teams will play a continuous 36 holes on the opening day before an 18-hole final round on Sunday. ECU players will be paired alongside golfer from Princeton and Toledo during the first two rounds.

Sunday's action begins with tee times starting at 7:55 a.m.

The Pirates are coming off of a third-place finish at the Island Resort Collegiate at the Sage Run Golf Club in Escabana, Mich. Senior Blake Taylor and junior Tim Bunten each carded a 3-under-par 213 to lead ECU while tying for sixth-place individually.

Taylor leads the Pirates' five-man lineup this weekend and will be joined by sophomore A.J. Beechler and Attie Giles along with freshman Chris Sperrazza and senior Patrick Stephenson. Beechler posted a score of 3-over-par 219 during last year's tournament, while Taylor fired a 6-over-par and Stephenson finished at 10-over.

Beechler is coming off a 3-over-par 219 showing at Sage Run to open the season and Giles is looking to build off a season-opening 5-over-par 211 performance. Sperrezza and Stephenson will be making their season debuts.

ECU has participated in the Rod Myers Invitational each year since 2012 and took home the team title in 2014 with former Pirate George Kilgore winning medalist honors.
