
Wake Forest Defeats East Carolina In UNF Invitational Finale

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – East Carolina fell for the first time in 2019, losing a three-set (19-25, 18-25, 17-25) decision to Wake Forest Saturday morning in its final match of the UNF Invitational.

The Demon Deacons hit .374 with 48 kills on 107 attempts. Conversely, the Pirates fired at a .184 clip with 33 kills and 15 errors on 98 swings. Wake Forest doubled up ECU in the blocking column 8.0 to 4.0 while the Pirates ended up with a slight advantage in total digs (41-40).

Peyton Suess paced the Demon Deacons with 13 kills and a .306 hitting percentage. East Carolina was led by junior right side Bri Wood who put down nine kills and did not commit an error in 17 attempts for a .529 hitting mark. Redshirt junior libero Brandee Markwith topped all players with 13 digs.

Wake Forest pulled away in the middle stages of the opening set and forced ECU to call timeout with the Pirates trailing 14-9. East Carolina was unable to catch up and eventually dropped the opener by six.

The Pirates raced out to a 6-1 advantage in the second. After a timeout, the lead reached 13-7 before a big run by Wake Forest erased the momentum and put ECU down by one at 14-13. The Demon Deacons rolled from there and took a two sets to none lead at the five-minute intermission.

A pair of consecutive aces saw Wake Forest build a healthy 10-5 cushion in the third. The lead grew to 19-12 before the Demon Deacons eventually closed out the sweep.

East Carolina returns to the floor Tuesday evening when it makes the short trip over to Raleigh for a non-conference match against NC State. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
