LYNCHBURG, Va. – The East Carolina track and field program took one last opportunity to fine tune things before the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, turning in a couple of solid performances this weekend at the Darius Dixon Memorial on the campus of Liberty University.
Â
"We had another successful weekend," Director of Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Curt Kraft said. "We had another great meet to close out the regular season competition schedule. Now, we have to turn our attention to the indoor conference championships. Going four weekends in a row has been very tough on the kids' bodies. We have to rest up over the next couple weeks both physically and mentally. Both teams feel really good about going into the meet with rest."
Â
Senior Ryan Davis continued his stellar season as one of the top throwers in the nation, breaking the meet record in the weight throw with a toss of 20.79 meters and winning his third event title of the campaign. He also posted the third-best shot put effort in program history for good measure, finishing fourth with a mark of 17.49 meters.
Â
Freshman Jake Justice produced a personal best in the pole vault, clearing 4.73 meters to stay at No. 5 on the Pirate all-time top-10 list. Classmate Niejel Wilkins claimed second in the triple jump, checking in with a mark of 14.52 meters.
Â
On the women's side, senior Nuria Tillo-Prats was second in the 1,000-meter run, notching the second-fastest time in school history at 2:52.30. Junior Shellbi Chapman took second in the 500-meter dash with a time of 1:16.27 while freshman Melicia Mouzzon placed second in the 60-meter dash by crossing the finish line in a time of 7.49. Additionally, junior Sommer Knight cleared 4.03 meters in the pole vault to end up in second.

The American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships will take place Feb. 28-29 in Birmingham, Ala.
