Pirates Ranked No. 48 By ITA
February 19, 2020 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – For the second straight year, the ECU women's tennis team earns a spot in the ITA Top-50, as the Pirates check in at No. 48.
"Firstly, congratulations to the team!" said associate head coach Kirstin Burgess. "It is always nice to be rewarded for your hard work, but the season is young and we have a lot of matches ahead of us. Now that we are here, it is time to work towards achieving the next goal and that starts this afternoon in Boone!"
Â
The No. 48 ranking is the highest in school history, beating out last year's squad which reached No. 49 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) rankings.
Â
ECU has started the season 3-3, but two of those losses come to team currently ranked in the top-four of the country. After starting the season 0-2 with losses at current No. 4 NC State and VCU, the Pirates rattled off three consecutive 4-3 wins at James Madison, UNC Greensboro, and Campbell. The Pirates saw their winning streak come to an end with a setback at No. 1 North Carolina.
Â
It is the second consecutive year that ECU has been ranked inside the top-50. Last season, 12-matches into what turned out to be a school-record 22-match winning streak, ECU was ranked in the top-50 for the first time in program history, checking in at No. 49.
Â
ECU is one of three American teams ranked in the ITA's top-50. UCF leads the way at No. 14 while Tulsa is ranked No. 36.
Â
The Pirates have a pair of road matches this week to finish an eight match road stretch to start the season. ECU will take on App State on Wednesday afternoon before heading to William & Mary on Saturday.
