Pirates Fall At William & Mary 4-2
February 22, 2020 | Women's Tennis
WILLIAMSBURG, VA. – Despite a pair of wins at the top of the lineup, the ECU women's tennis team fell to William & Mary 4-2 on Saturday afternoon.
"We got off to a slow start in doubles and really threw away some opportunities there," said associate head coach Kirstin Burgess. "In singles, we played some great sets, but couldn't piece it together on all the courts. We got some great wins from Lisa (Hofbauer) and Sibel (Tanik) at the top of the lineup though. Congrats to them."
No. 48 ECU falls to 3-5 on the season while William & Mary improves to 5-2.
The Pirates struggled to gain traction in doubles. Lisa Hofbauer and Sibel Tanik did have the lead against Mila Saric and Vitoria Okuyama on court one, but the Tribe won on the other two courts. Nastja Rettich and Michelle Ncube fell to Natalia Perry and Rosie Cheng 6-3 on court two followed by Elisa Van Meeteren and Raffaela Alchach topping Minette Van Vreden and Ho Chiao Hsia 6-2 on court three.
In singles, Hofbauer continued her strong play by beating Perry 6-0, 6-2 on court one to tie the match.
But William & Mary answered right back. Saric regained the lead for the Tribe by topping Ncube 6-1, 6-2 on court three followed by Van Meeteren beating Van Vreden 6-2, 6-3 on court six.
ECU pulled within one point through Tanik, who knocked off Cheng 6-2, 6-4. But the Pirates could not hold off William & Mary forever, as Okuyama's 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win over Rettich on court four clinched the match.
ECU will finally play its home opener next Friday when the Pirates host Elon at 2 p.m., at the River Birch Tennis Complex. Â
