Pirates Drop 4-1 Loss At Coastal Carolina
March 07, 2020 | Women's Tennis
CONWAY, S.C. – Depth at the bottom of the lineup cost the ECU women's tennis team as the Pirates fell 4-1 at Coastal Carolina on Saturday afternoon.
Â
"Tough conditions and another windy day today," said interim head coach Kirstin Burgess. "Looking around, it felt like we were fighting against the wind while the Coastal players adapted faster and were using it to their advantage. We are looking forward to spending the next two weeks resting and getting healthy."
Â
In doubles, ECU was forced to switch around its lineup due to injuries. Ho Chiao Hsia and Michelle Ncube played just their second match together and Victoria Dixon and Hanna Axelsson were playing together for the first time and that inexperience showed. The Chanticleers won on court three when Flaminia Scara and Alexa Tiefel topped Dixon and Axelsson 6-2. Coastal Carolina clinched the point when Jessie Mount and Somer Dalla-Bona beat Lisa Hofbauer and Sibel Tanik 6-4.
Â
In singles, the Chanticleers dominated on the lower courts to pull away. Maria Khomchenko earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sofia Anthony on court six. ECU did get a point when Hsia beat Valentina Urelli 6-1, 6-4 on court five. But Mount beat Axelsson by the same score on court four. Rounding out the singles matches was a 6-2, 6-2 win for Scara over Ncube on court three.
Â
ECU will play a pair of matches on Wednesday. The Pirates will take on Rio Piedras at 11 a.m., and Augustana at 2 p.m.
