CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A crowd of 66,347, the largest ever assembled for a college football game in the state of North Carolina, was on hand to see East Carolina hand NC State a 50-29 defeat at Ericsson Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.
Â
Sophomore FB Scott Harley scored three touchdowns and motored for a school-record 351 yards on 42 carries. Harley's rushing performance was the ninth-best single-game tally in NCAA history and the best-ever by a sophomore.
Â
Harley broke loose on two separate runs in the first half, finding the end zone on a 75-yard scamper in the first quarter and reaching paydirt again in the second quarter on a 60-yard run. The Pirate offense amassed 640 total yards in the game, the best offensive performance of the season.
Â
In the second half, the Wolfpack matched the Pirate scores, but could never cut the ECU lead to more than a dozen. QB Dan Gonzalez hit Troy Smith on a 23-yard strike in the fourth quarter to put the Pirates up by 19 points. After a Wolfpack score cut the lead to 12, Gonzalez found SE Larry Shannon on a 43-yard pass that ignited the Pirates faithful in the stands.
