
Classic Rewind: ECU Rolls Past Texas Tech In galleryfurniture.com Bowl

The East Carolina football team soared in the inaugural galleryfurniture.com Bowl in Houston, Texas, as the Pirates held Texas Tech scoreless for almost all of the first half and then held on for a 40-27 victory.

In the first quarter, the Pirates came out with a bang, putting the first points on the scoreboard on their first possession with a six-yard TD run by David Garrard. Held to three and out on the ensuing possession by the Pirate defense, the Red Raiders were forced to punt, setting up a 71-yard TD return by Keith Stokes. With only 4:27 left in the period, the Pirates once again put seven on the board as Leonard Henry scored on a one-yard run.

In the second quarter, the Pirates continued to charge ahead as Derrick Collier caught a 54-yard TD pass from Garrard and Henry scored on another one-yard run. The Red Raiders squeezed in a touchdown of their own in the final minutes of the half as Kliff Kingsbury connected with Derek Dorris for a seven-yard pass.

The offense slowed down in the second half while the Red Raiders tried to stage a comeback. Texas Tech scored first in the half as Darnell Jones caught a 65-yard pass from Kingsbury. The Pirates then scored their last six points of the game, as Kevin Miller kicked two field goals, one from 36 yards and another from 35.

The Red Raiders shut out the Pirates in the fourth and scored 13 points on two Kingsbury passes. He first connected with Cole Roberts from 17 yards and then with Dorris again from three yards out.

Henry rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns and Garrard completed 17 of 27 passes for 229 yards and one touchdown. Stokes ended his ECU career with 82 return yards in the contest.
