GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The NCAA has honored the ECU women's golf and women's cross country teams with Public Recognition Awards for their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) which ranks in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sport, according to an announcement by the organization Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Each team earned a perfect score of 1,000 for the 2018-19 academic year. The most recent multiyear rates are based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, 2018-19 academic years. Baseball, men's golf, men's tennis and women's track also garnered perfect scores for 2018-19.
Â
The recognition marks the fifth straight and sixth overall for the women's golf team who was cited for its academic achievement following designation after the 2004-05 academic year and each subsequent year beginning in 2014-15.
Â
Teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to 1,380, up by 52 from the previous academic year, largely due to an increase in squads with perfect scores. APRs for programs in the top 10% ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000. The number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,266, an increase of 52 teams from last year.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention as well as graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
Â
APR scores for all Division I teams will be released May 19. The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
