Four Pirates Named WGCA All-American Scholars

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. – Four East Carolina women's golfers (Caroline Hermes, Dorthea Forbrigd, Siranon Shoomee and Grace Yatawara) have been named 2019-20 Division I All-American Scholars according to an announcement by the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) on Monday.

With Forbrigd (four times), Shoomee (three times) and Yataware (twice), it marks the 16th-straight year that at least two Pirates have been named All-America Scholars in the same year (2005-present).

During her first season at ECU, Hermes participated in six events posting a 76.29 stroke average, which ranked fifth on the team. She made her collegiate debut at the Minnesota Invitational posted a 36-hole scored of 150 finishing tied for 41st. The Welzheim, Germany native registered her lone top 5 finish at the Pirate Collegiate Classic where she carded a 4-over par 220 posting even par scores of 72 (career-low) during second and third round action. In her 17 rounds of competition, Hermes posted rounds of 75 or better seven times.

Forbrigd closed out her senior-shortened season appearing in all seven events and leading the team with a 71.55 stroke average. She tallied a top 20 finish in each event she participated in including winning the Pirate Collegiate Classic by posting a new tournament-low score of 210 (6-under par) for her third career win. The Oslo, Norway native also claimed a second place finish in the final event of the season when she carded a 5-under par (211) at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational. For her career, she owns a program-best 73.06 stroke average and has posted 10 top 5 finishes and 14 top 10 placements. Forbrigd, who announced on April 13, 2020 that she will return for another season at ECU, which was granted to all spring student-athletes by the NCAA. A 2020 graduate of ECU (business management), Forbrigd is a four-time WGCA All-American Scholar, eight-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll members and a two-time American Athletic Confrence All-Academic Team selection.

Shoomee participated in all seven events during her senior season, which was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, posting a team second-best 74.40 stroke average. The Sanford, N.C. native registered three top 11 placements with her career-best finish coming at the coming at the 2019 Minnesota Invitational – a share of third place. Shoomee posted rounds of 70 and 68, the latter tying her career-low round, for a 36-hole score of 138 (6-under par). She also placed 11th at the Pirate Collegiate Classic (224, 8-over) and Lady Puerto Rico Classic (217, 1-over) giving her six career top 11 finishes. Her career stroke average of 75.14 stands eighth all-time on the Pirate annuals. In the classroom, she earned her degree in engineering in May of 2020 and leaves ECU as a three-time WGCA All-American Scholar, an eight-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member and a two-time AAC All-Academic Team selection.

Yatawara closed out her career participating in six events and sporting a personal-best 75.41 stroke average. The Salisbury, N.C. native claimed a pair of top 15 finishes, which included a career-best share of ninth at the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational. At that event, she posted rounds of 71, 74 and 74 for a career-low 54-hole total of 219 (3-over par). In all, she posted eight rounds of 75 or better with a season-low 71. During her four-year career, she posted one top 10 and four top 15 finishes to go along with a 76.74 stroke average that stands 17th all-time at ECU. During the summer of 2019, she claimed medalist honors at the South Asian Games winning the gold medal by 21 strokes (296, 8-over par) in Kathmandu, Nepal. In the classroom, she earned her degree in engineering in May of 2020 and leaves ECU as a two-time WGCA All-American Scholar, an eight-time ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll member and a two-time AAC All-Academic team selection.

In the 20-year history of the women's program, 19 golfers have tallied 56 WGCA All-American Scholar honors, while seven have been recognized all four years at ECU.
