GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina returns home Saturday for the first of four consecutive home games, welcoming Coppin State to Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum for a non-conference bout. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
Â
The Pirates (4-2) put together a 1-2 showing at the Myrtle Beach Invitational last weekend, defeating Old Dominion while also falling by single-digit margins to 2020-21 postseason teams Oklahoma and Davidson. ECU was within one possession of the Sooners in final minute while the Pirates led the Wildcats by 11 at the half before faltering down the stretch.
Â
East Carolina leading scorer Tristen Newton (20.5 points per game) extended his double-digit scoring streak to nine with 28 points versus Davidson. He was named to the American Athletic Conference weekly honor roll for the second time in as many weeks after averaging 21.3 points per game and shooting 55.3 percent from the floor in Myrtle Beach. Newton was also tabbed to the Myrtle Beach Invitational honorable mention all-tournament team.
Â
Vance Jackson notched his team-best second double-double of the campaign against Davidson, scoring 12 points and pulling down 11 rebounds. He, along with Newton, Brandon Suggs, J.J. Miles and Ludgy Debaut, have started all six games for the Pirates this season.
Â
Coppin State (1-8) has lost three in a row, most recently at Canisius by a 76-75 margin on Wednesday. Jesse Zarzuela led the squad with 19 points and three assists as the Eagles shot 42 percent and were out-rebounded by one (39-38).
Â
ECU and Coppin State have met just twice on the hardwood with each team winning one of the encounters. The Pirates knocked off the Eagles 76-50 in Greenville back on Nov. 12, 2017 before Coppin State returned the favor with an 85-75 victory at Minges Coliseum Dec. 3, 2019.
Â
Davidson Leftovers
Newton has now scored in double figures in nine-straight games ... East Carolina lost for the first time this season when leading at the half ... The Pirates have used the same starting lineup in all six contests ... The East Carolina bench has out-scored its opponents' reserves in every game this season, including by a 13-7 margin against Davidson ... Sunday marked the first time in 2021-22 that ECU has not scored at least 70 points.
Â
Against The MEAC
The Pirates are 17-5 against current members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. ECU downed league program South Carolina State in its season opener back on Nov. 9.
Â
On This Date
East Carolina is 5-5 in games played on Nov. 27. One year ago, the Pirates began their unconventional COVID-19 affected season with a 66-57 victory at Charlotte.
