Pirates Produce High Marks In The Classroom
January 20, 2023 | Volleyball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina volleyball program continued building a successful foundation in the fall of 2022 as the Pirates racked up an impressive 3.42 grade point average.
Â
A pair of ECU players earned Chancellor's List status with perfect 4.0 GPAs in Kenzie Beckham and Sophia Kruczko. Additionally, Alyssa Finister, Jennings Hall, Izzy Marinelli, Tia Shum and Alex Singleton were placed on the Dean's List for garnering at least a 3.5 GPA while Angeles Alderete, Juliana Askew, Kianie Cummings, Payton Evenstad, Sariah Schulteis, Kellyn Trowse and Merritt Woodson notched 3.0 or higher marks to collect Honor Roll recognition.
Â
Apart from its accomplishments in the classroom, East Carolina enjoyed a solid campaign on the court. The Pirates recorded 12 wins, the most in head coach Adler Augustin's tenure, while capturing six American Athletic Conference victories - tied for the second most in a single season (2014, 2019) since ECU joined the league. The Purple and Gold finished seventh in the standings after getting picked ninth in the preseason coaches' poll.
Â
Individually, Angeles Alderete was the second player in program history to be named the AAC Freshman of the Year (Shelby Martin/2017). She was also tabbed to the All-AAC Second Team. Alderete finished third in the conference in total kills (501), kills per set (4.07) and points per set (4.56). She is the first Pirate to record at least 500 kills in a season since ECU Athletics Hall of Fame member Kelley Wernert notched a program record 627 in 2007.
Â
A trio of East Carolina players slotted among the top 10 in a few statistical categories. Kenzie Beckham was fifth in digs per set (3.85), Shaylynn Hall finished seventh in blocks per set (1.08) and Payton Evenstad ranked 10th in aces per set (0.30).
Â
ECU returns a large portion of its production in 2023 as the American Athletic Conference shifts membership. Charlotte, Florida Atlantic, North Texas, Rice, UAB and UTSA join the fold to offset the departure of Cincinnati, Houston and UCF to the Big 12 Conference. Â
