
East Carolina Falters In Four Sets At South Florida

TAMPA, Fla. āĀ South Florida handed East Carolina its fourth-straight loss Thursday night and moved into first place in the American Athletic Conference East Division in the process, picking up a 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 15-25, 25-20) victory at The Corral.

The Pirates (18-8, 9-6 AAC) will try to pull back even with the Bulls (16-10, 10-5 AAC) in the standings when the teams meet again Friday at 2 p.m.

Angeles Alderete led ECU with 21 kills, 12 digs and a .405 hitting percentage, but Maria Clara Andrade paced all players in the match with 26 kills while hitting .353. South Florida held the statistical advantage in nearly every category, including hitting percentage (.263-.232), kills (56-48), assists (54-46) and digs (60-50). The Pirates outblocked the Bulls 12.0 to 3.0 and held a slight 7-6 edge in service aces.

East Carolina got off to a hot start in the opening set, leading 5-1 after a Fran McBride solo block. South Florida answered right back with a 4-0 run to knot the score and led by as much as 23-20 late in the frame before Andrade sealed it for the home team with a kill.

The Bulls rolled out to an 18-11 lead in the second stanza before the Pirates put together a 9-1 run to draw within 21-20. ECU could not quite catch up though as South Florida fended off the charge and won the set by three to take a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.

East Carolina came out blazing in the third frame, building leads of 15-11 and 22-13 on the way to extending the match with a 10-point victory. The Bulls recovered in the fourth, taking an 11-6 advantage and holding the Pirates at an arm's length the rest of the way.
