Pirates No. 14 in USTFCCCA Southeast Regional Ratings
January 23, 2024 | Track & Field
GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's track & field team was rated as the No. 14 team in the Southeast Region according to the year's first United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Regional Track & Field Ratings Index rankings released on Monday.
The ranking is the highest for the Pirate women since Feb. 10, 2020 when the Pirates came in at No. 14 in the region.
This comes after the team posted a stellar season-opening weekend at the Hokie Invitational on Friday and Saturday. Melicia Mouzzon broke her own program record in the 60m at the meet, posting a time of 7.29 seconds which currently ranks 18th nationally through two weeks of competition.
Three other Pirates posted marks which rank in the top 50 in the nation over the weekend with Sydni McMillan, L'Nya Carpenter and Nyah Edwards all putting up strong results.
McMillan posted the third-best 60m hurdles performance in program history with a time of 8.27 seconds, now 28th in the nation. Carpenter narrowly missed her PR in the triple jump with the 31st-best mark in the nation, clearing a distance of 12.61m. Edwards launched a massive PR in the weight throw with a mark of 19.34m, good for fourth in program history and 49th nationally.
The Pirates distance medley relay squad of Abrielle Schweitzer, Nyah Gore, Sarah Ann Miller and Brianna Winsett also performed well with the 48th fastest time in the country in the young season with a time of 12:48.26.
The Pirates will be back in action on Friday and Saturday as they travel to the JDL Camel City Invite in Winston-Salem.
