
ECU Blanks Temple To Stay Unbeaten At Home

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina snapped a modest two-match losing streak Friday night, turning aside American Athletic Conference opponent Temple 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 28-26) inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

The victory marked the sixth for ECU in as many home contests this campaign. The Pirates have won 18 of 20 sets inside the friendly confines and have swept five of those matches.

East Carolina (11-6, 4-3 AAC) moved back over .500 in conference play while the Owls (8-12, 1-6 AAC) fell to 0-8 in true road matches. The Pirates also won their fifth-straight decision over Temple.

As it has all year, ECU ran a balanced attack with three players picking up double-digit kills. In addition to Ellie Pate's team-high 14, Angeles Alderete notched another double-double to the tune of 12 kills and 17 digs and Aulie Huff fired home 10 kills with no errors in 23 attempts to hit a robust .435. Lara Uyar anchored the back row with 13 digs and Fran McBride was a menace at the net, racking up six blocks (two solo).

Sydney Jones put together a nice performance for the visitors, registering a match-high 16 kills and 10 digs. Former Pirate Alyssa Finister ended up with seven kills and two blocks.

One could describe the East Carolina offensive efforts as efficient. The Pirates collected 45 kills and committed just 11 attacking errors to end up at .260 while limiting Temple to a .138 hitting percentage with 23 miscues in 145 swings. ECU also out blocked the statistical top blocking side in the league 7.0 to 5.0.

The Pirates hit the gas in the opening frame, racing out to a 19-10 advantage. The Owls rallied late in the stanza to slice their deficit to 22-20, but Alderete restored order with a kill and East Carolina ended the set on a 3-1 run.

ECU never trailed in the second set, holding Temple at arm's length to win it by three and enter the intermission in control. However, the Owls exited the locker room determined to extend the contest. A kill by Finister made it 15-14 in favor of Temple at the media timeout and the sides traded the lead back and forth a couple of time before settling for deadlocks at 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26. An attacking error put the Pirates on the verge of the sweep at 27-26 and Alderete did the rest, putting down her final kill of the evening to terminate the Owls for good.
