GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team is set for their season opener against Charleston Southern on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in Minges Coliseum. Tickets are available for purchase and for those unable to attend, the game will be available for stream on ESPN+ and on radio on 94.3 The Game.
Last Time Out
The Pirates made a run to the American Athletic Conference title game for the second year in a row to end 2023-24, falling to Rice by a score of 61-41. The run was miraculous at times with major performances from Danae McNeal, Tatyana Wyche, Khia Miller and Amiya Joyner as well as clutch play all around. The Pirates will be looking to return to that stage in 2025 and to finish the job this time.
Scouting Charleston Southern
The Buccaneers enter the game following a thumping at No. 16 North Carolina on Monday, 83-53. Catherine Alben led the team with 18 points in the loss, pacing three players in double figures. Alben was the team's second-leading scorer with 13.9 per game behind Kennedi Jackson's 14.3 per. Without Jackson on this year's squad, Alben figures to be the go-to scorer. She did get help on Monday from the likes of Tyonna Bailey who posted 11 points and eight rebounds and Keshunti Nichols with 10 and six to help the efforts.
Series History
The Pirates own the all-time series with the Buccaneers, 3-0, with the most recent meeting coming on Dec. 21, 2023 in a 75-46 blowout for ECU. Four Pirates scored in double figures in the game led by Amiya Joyner's impressive 12 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, flirting with a triple-double in just 26 minutes played. Micah Dennis, now on the ECU staff, also contributing 15 points in the win.
The Expectations Game
The Pirates have been picked sixth in the American Athletic Conference Preseason Poll. Amiya Joyner was tabbed Preseason All-Conference Second Team.
The Talent is There
The Pirates have a host of players who entered the collegiate ranks to some fanfare. Timia Ware was a 90 rated recruit and the No. 20 point guard according to ESPN in the 2021 class. In that same class, Taliyah Wyche was rated 90 as well and the No. 18 forward in the class while her twin, Tatyana Wyche was the No. 29 forward and rated 89. Tatyana was also noted as the No. 109 overall recruit in her class by ProspectsNation.com. Later on, Amiya Joyner was the No. 70 overall recruit and 93 rated by ESPN in her 2022 class before Khia Miller was the No. 94 recruit in the 2023 class and rated 91 by ESPN.Â
