GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina dropped three close sets (23-25, 22-25, 22-25) Friday night in an American Athletic Conference loss to Tulsa inside Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum.

The Pirates (16-7, 9-4 AAC) and Golden Hurricane (16-9, 8-5 AAC) finished nearly even in hitting percentage with ECU holding a slight .286 to .285 edge, but Tulsa was sharper in serve-receive and also terminated the volleyball 10 more times (51-41). The visitors also finished with a 47-45 advantage in digs.

Angeles Alderete logged a double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs to pace the Purple and Gold while Tatum Tornatta registered a match-high 14 kills for Tulsa.

East Carolina built an 11-8 lead in the opening set but could not hold on down the stretch as the Golden Hurricane surged ahead 21-19 and broke a 23-23 deadlock with a Pirate service error and Rachel Brown kill to take the frame.

Tulsa raced out to a 15-11 cushion in the second stanza before ECU scored nine of the next 14 points to pull even at 20. The Golden Hurricane had the last word, ending the set on a 5-2 run to seize control at the intermission.

Looking to extend the evening, East Carolina utilized a Tulsa attacking error to lead the third frame 16-11. However, the Golden Hurricane chipped away at the deficit with an 8-3 run to knot the score at 19. Tulsa locked in down the stretch as the Pirates faltered with two-straight errors to give the Golden Hurricane an upper hand it would not relinquish.
