Pirates Prepared for Sunday Meeting with Old Dominion

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team is back in Virginia for a Sunday afternoon contest with Old Dominion set for a 3:30 p.m. tip. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+ with Chip Tarkenton and Kim Aston on the call.
The game is also Old Dominion's annual Anne Donovan Classic. Donovan, a championship winning player coach and Basketball Hall of Fame inductee who won Olympic gold medals both as a player, assistant and head coach for the United States, also coached at East Carolina from 1995-98.Â
Last Time Out
The Pirates turned in a dominant win over Hampton on Thursday morning with a 31-point win. With five players in double-figures scoring for the first time since 2018, the Pirates led wire-to-wire and pushed their margin to as many as 39 in the fourth quarter while holding an opponent to under 50 points scored for the second consecutive game. Amiya Joyner had a terrific day with 16 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two assists on 8-10 from the field.
Scouting Old Dominion
The Monarchs enter the game with a 6-3 record after falling to NC State, 86-55, on the road last time out. For the year, the team has been terrific with six players scoring six-plus points per game, led by En'Dya Buford's 11.2 to go with 5.1 rebounds per game. Buford also leads the team with 32 assists on the season. On the glass, it's been a team effort with seven players grabbing three-or-more boards per game.
Series History
Despite over 50 meetings all time since their first contest in 1970, the Pirates and Monarchs have not met since 2014, making this the first matchup for for both head coaches and all players involved. ODU holds the all-time edge 43-9, including 28 straight wins from 1992 to 2007.
Efficiency
With a 31-50 clip shooting on Thursday at Hampton, the Pirates shot 60 percent from the field for the first time since Jan. 18, 2014 in an 86-55 win over Louisiana Tech in which the team shot 34-56 (.607).
Helpers
With 20 assists, the Pirates dished out their most helpers since Feb. 22, 2023 when the team had 25 assists in a 2OT win over Houston. Micah Dennis has 12 by herself in that game.
Spread the Wealth
The Pirates have five players score in double figures on Thursday. It was the first time doing so for the program since Jan. 27, 2018 in a 79-70 win at Cincinnati.
History in the Making
With 10 rebounds on Thursday, Amiya Joyner now has 686 career rebounds and has moved into the top 10 on the ECU career list, bumping Danielle Melvin out of her previous 10th spot (682 from 1996-2000). Her now 106 blocks rank sixth all time, just five away from tying Jen Cox in fifth.
Weekly Recognition
Khia Miller was named to the American Athletic Conference's weekly Honorable Mention list for her efforts against Elon in which she scored a career high 24 points on 8-13 from the field, including 4-6 from three-point range as well as a perfect 4-4 clip from the foul line.
