Mouzzon Named AAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week
February 06, 2024 | Track & Field
IRVING, Texas - East Carolina track & field's Melicia Mouzzon has been named the American Athletic Conference's Women's Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. The recognition is the first of Mouzzon's career.
Mouzzon's honor comes after a phenomenal weekend at the South Carolina Invite on Saturday. At the meet, the sprinter finished second in both the 60m and 200m, both in remarkable times. In the 60m, Mouzzon nearly missed her own program record, lowered earlier this season (7.29), with her time of 7.30. In the 200m, Mouzzon ran a stunning PR, clocking a time of 23.65 seconds, good for second in program history.Â
Her 60m of 7.29 ranks already 29th in the NCAA this season while her newly set 200m time ranks 56th in the nation.
"We as a staff could not be more excited for Melicia Mouzzon to receive this honor," said Director of Track & Field Curt Kraft. "Melicia has worked extremely hard to get to this point in her career. This is Melicia's 5th year in our program, and she would be the first to tell you how much she has grown and matured to get to this point. Coach Udon Cheek has done a tremendous job of developing her into what she is today. What Melicia has accomplished, doesn't happen by mistake, it happens through hard work and be dedicated. Before her career is over, she will have rewritten all the records in the record books. Melicia is very deserving of this award. This will motivate her to do bigger and better thing's moving forward."
Mouzzon is the first Pirate to earn weekly honors since Jared Harrell in the outdoor season and the first to do so indoors since fellow sprinter Royal Burris a season ago.
Mouzzon and the Pirates will be back in action on Friday and Saturday at Liberty's Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational in Lynchburg, Va.
