Mouzzon Tabbed American Women’s Track Athlete of the Week
March 26, 2024 | Track & Field
IRVING, Texas – East Carolina track & field's Melicia Mouzzon has been named the American Athletic Conference's Women's Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Â
Mouzzon earned her honor after a victorious effort in the 100m at High Point's Bob Davidson Team Challenge. The senior's time of 11.38 seconds bested the competition and was good for eighth in the NCAA through the second week of the outdoor season as well as fifth in the East Region.
Â
The time, while not a personal record, was still better than any time run by any ECU athlete all time not named Mouzzon.
"We are extremely excited that Melicia has once again been chosen by the AAC as the Female Track Athlete of the week," said Director of Track & Field Curt Kraft. "As I have mentioned many times before, these awards are not given by mistake, they are awarded to people that have worked very hard both on the field and in the classroom. Melicia is very deserving of this award. Melicia has put in a lot of work and dedication to get to this point in her career. Melicia has set some lofty goals for this season. She has to stay healthy and trust the process and she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to."
The weekly recognition is the second of Mouzzon's career and second in 2024 as she earned weekly honors during the indoor season as well. Mouzzon is the first ECU women's athlete to earn multiple weekly honors since Kayla Padgett was twice named Field Athlete of the Week back in 2016. Royal Burris earned multiple honors more recently on the men's side.
Â
Mouzzon and the Pirates will be back in action Thursday to Saturday this week as they travel to the Raleigh Relays hosted by N.C. State.
