Dazzling McMillan Highlights Pirates at Wake Forest Invite, Aggie Classic
April 20, 2024 | Track & Field
WAKE FOREST / GREENSBORO, N.C. – The East Carolina track & field program concluded its 2024 outdoor regular season on Friday and Saturday at the Wake Forest Invitational and Aggie Classic. Sydni McMillan was the highlight of the weekend with her demolition of the program's 100m hurdles record, which she promptly reset again on Saturday.
Â
McMillan had a dream run on Friday to take down Cheyenne Hutchinson's program record which had stood since 2015, setting the new standard at 13.17 seconds. The senior lowered the time by 0.14 seconds in an awe-inspiring display, wind legal with a mere 0.8 mph tailwind. That time entered Saturday at No. 25 in the NCAA and No. 13 in the East Region.
Â
The record wouldn't stand for long, being reset not 24 hours later as McMillan ran a time of 13.16 seconds to take second place in the event at the Aggie Classic.
Â
McMillan was not the lone bright spot for the Pirates on the weekend, though, in fact, Colin McCauley started the weekend with a splash on Friday morning with his 14:44.37 performance in the men's 5,000m. The effort moved him into fourth in ECU history in the event and set up a strong morning for the distance group.
Â
Speaking of the distance group, Nick Willer and Zach Willer followed McCauley up in the 3,000m steeple with a strong finish in 9:19.18 and 9:19.50, respectively. Zach's 9:19.50 was a personal best and moved him up a spot to No. 6 in ECU history in the event. Nick already holds the second-best time in program history at 9:15.20 which he ran last season.
Â
Back into the sprints, Melicia Mouzzon and Royal Burris did what the Pirates have become accustomed with a Mouzzon win in the 100m and a Burris win in the 200m. Mouzzon also finished second in the 200m while Burris took third in the 100m.
Â
In the hurdles, Terence Booth, Jr. joined McMillan in victory with his 110m-hurdle win in a time of 14.41 seconds.
Â
In the throws, Shakiel Dacres had another strong day in the discus, improving upon his mark which already ranked No. 6 in ECU history, setting a new best in Purple and Gold at 51.76m.
Â
Over in Greensboro on Friday at North Carolina A&T's Aggie Classic, the Pirates found a handful of victories, including a pair of sweeps in the men's and women's pole vault and men's and women's 5,000m.
Â
In the pole vault, Starrett Vesper and Rileigh Cardin were victorious with clearances of 3.40m and 4.70m, respectively. In the 5,000m, Conner O'Shea and Claire Cashman took wins with times of 15:55.74 and 18:41.66.
Â
On Saturday, McMillan was not the only Pirate who doubled back and found success. Booth found tremendous success, running two PRs and eventually winding up with a time of 14.04 seconds in the 110m hurdles, tied for seventh best in ECU history in the event.
Â
Burris also found success at a second meet on Saturday, taking second at the Aggie Classic in the 100m with a season-best time of 10.19 seconds. Entering the weekend, that time stood at No. 25 in the NCAA and No. 17 in the East.
Â
Among athletes who did not double up, Nyah Gore posted a season best in the women's 400m, taking second in the meet with a time of 55.90 seconds. Gore already holds the No. 4 time in program history.
Â
In the triple jump, L'Nya Carpenter took third in the meet with a strong mark of 12.19m.
