McMillan Named American Athletic Conference Track Athlete of the Week
April 23, 2024 | Track & Field
IRVING, Texas - East Carolina track & field's Sydni McMillan has been named the American Athletic Conference's Women's Track Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
McMillan's honor comes after she not only shattered the program's 100m hurdles record at the Wake Forest Invitational, but went on to break it again a day later at the Aggie Classic. Entering the weekend, McMillan's personal record of 13.33 seconds in the event ranked second in ECU history behind Cheyenne Hutchinson's 13.31 second effort from 2015. On Friday, the senior took the mark down, lowering it all the way to 13.17 seconds in wind legal conditions to take the win at Wake Forest. She followed it up with a 13.16 effort at North Carolina A&T on Saturday, finishing second in that meet.
McMillan's time now ranks 28th in the NCAA, 14th in the East Region and first in the American Athletic Conference by a whopping 0.13 seconds.
The honor is the first of McMillan's career and the third of 2024 for the Pirates with two previous nods for Melicia Mouzzon.
Quotable
"We as a staff and a program couldn't be more excited for Sydni McMillan receiving this award," said Director of Track & Field Curt Kraft. "It's very gratifying to me to see somebody earn an award that has been earned rather than given. Sydni is so deserving of this award that she has earned. I have watched Sydni for almost four years now and to see how she has progressed to this point is outstanding. She is an example of when you work hard, follow rules, and buy into the process, then great things will follow. Coach Udon Cheek has done an amazing job of developing her into what she is today, and I know Sydni has set her eyes on bigger things ahead."
McMillan and the Pirates will be back in action on May 10-12 in San Antonio, Texas for the 2024 American Athletic Conference Championships.
