May 27, 2024 | Baseball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina is set to make its 34th NCAA Regional appearance and eighth in the last nine years after earning the No. 16 National Seed and the top seed in the Greenville Regional for the 2024 NCAA Baseball Championship. The NCAA revealed the full bracket during its annual Selection Show Monday afternoon.
Â
Monday's selection marks the fifth time in the last six years the Pirates have earned a Top 16 overall seed (No. 12 in 2018, No. 10 in 2019, No. 13 in 2021, No. 8 in 2022 and No. 16 in 2024).
Â
ECU has qualified for regional competition in 20 of the last 25 seasons (no tournament in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic) and eight times during head coach Cliff Godwin's 10-year tenure after traveling to the Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional in 2015, Charlottesville (Va.) Regional in 2016 and 2023 and hosting in 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2024 in Greenville.
Â
The Pirates (43-15), who play host to their seventh regional at Lewis Field inside Clark-LeClair Stadium, will square off against No. 4 seed and Missouri Valley Conference tournament champion Evansville (35-23) in the first round of regional play Friday, May 31 at 1 p.m., while No. 2 seed Wake Forest (38-20) will face No. 3 seed and Atlantic 10 Conference tournament champion VCU (37-21) at 6 p.m. Both games will stream live via ESPN+.
Â
East Carolina and Evansville have never met on the diamond. The Pirates last encountered Wake Forest in 2014 and own a 12-7 advantage in the all-time series. As for VCU, ECU leads that series 34-32 after taking two of three from the Rams in Greenville back in 2022.
Â
Of the 64 teams announced Monday, the Pirates own a 6-5 overall record in 2024 against five institutions: Duke (0-1), NC State (2-0), North Carolina (2-1), Tulane (0-3) and UNCW (2-0).
