
Pirates Announce Signing Of Jayshayne Woodard

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina Men's Basketball has officially announced the signing of guard Jayshayne Woodard on Thursday morning.
The Harlem, N.Y. native comes to Greenville after competing at Indian River State College in Florida where he was tabbed the FCSAA/Region Eight Player of the Year in both of his seasons with the Pioneers and was named the FCSAA/Region Eight Player of the Week seven times.
"We are very excited about everything that Jay will bring to our program", head coach Michael Schwartz said. "He is a leader, competitor and winner and has been very well coached both in junior college, and before that by Dermon Player and Karriem Memminger with the Riverside Hawks in New York City."
Woodard averaged 15.5 points per game and 10.5 rebounds last season at Indian River State on 51.4 percent shooting from the floor and 36.3 percent from the three-point line. He also added 6.8 assists per contest and started in all 31 games played in 2023-24.Â
"At 6'7", Jay has an athletic skill set and high feel for the game that will allow him to play anywhere on the floor with great versatility," Schwartz added. "The combination of who he is as a player and even more so as a person will lead to an immediate, positive impact on our program".
The two-time NJCAA All-American led the Pioneers to a 26-6 record in 2023-24 while recording a program record three triple-doubles. Woodard finished the season ranked sixth in assists and ninth in total rebounds in the NJCAA.Â
Woodard posted similar averages in his freshman campaign with the Pioneers, tallying 14.8 points per game on 53.1 percent shooting from the floor and was the only first-year player on the 12-member NJCAA All-Region Team for 2022-23. The Region Eight Southern Conference Player of the Year scored in double figures in 22 of his 30 games played highlighted by a career-high 35 points on 16-of-20 shooting and 17 rebounds against Daytona State.
