East Carolina Announces 2024 Volleyball Schedule
June 13, 2024 | Volleyball
GREENVILLE, N.C. – 11 home matches, a road contest versus 2023 Final Four participant Pitt and the return of the American Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship help comprise the 2024 East Carolina volleyball competition schedule released in its entirety Thursday afternoon.
Â
The Pirates posted their first 20-win season since 2017 and just the fifth in program history last year, compiling a 21-11 overall record and 11-8 AAC mark – good for a sixth-place tie with North Texas in the conference standings. ECU also played postseason volleyball for the first time ever, hosting the first and second rounds of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. The Pirates swept The Citadel in their opening match before falling to Georgia Southern to close out the campaign.
Â
For the first time since the spring of 2021, the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Volleyball Championship will be determined via a conference tournament. The AAC has abandoned divisional play in 2024 and, as such, the top eight teams in the standings will qualify for the event. Wichita State, by virtue of its second place finish a season ago, has earned the right to host the tournament Nov. 22-24 at Charles Koch Arena as regular season champion SMU has since departed for the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Â
East Carolina will play 16 American Conference matches this season. The league slate kicks off with a road swing through the Sunshine State where the Pirates will take on Florida Atlantic (Sept. 27) and South Florida (Sept. 29). ECU hosts UTSA, North Texas, Temple, Wichita State, FAU, Tulsa, South Florida and Charlotte during conference play while also traveling to Tulane, Rice, Charlotte, Memphis, UAB and Temple.
Â
The 2024 season unofficially begins Aug. 24 with an exhibition match at Elon. The Pirates then travel to Wilmington for their opening weekend of play where they are slated to face Queens University, Loyola (Md.) and host UNCW for a multi-team event.
Â
East Carolina's home schedule starts Sept. 5-7 when it entertains North Carolina A&T, Texas A&M University – Commerce and Western Carolina for the 2024 Pirate Invitational. ECU also faces road challenges at Campbell (Sept. 10), South Carolina (Sept. 17) and Pitt (Sept. 20). The Panthers produced a 29-5 record last season and won a share of the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title before making a run to the national semifinals. The Pirates will also battle perennial Big East Conference power Marquette (Sept. 21) while in Pittsburgh.
Â
ECU returns five starters from last season's 20-win squad, including All-AAC First Team selection and outside hitter Angeles Alderete. Head coach Adler Augustin enters his fifth season in charge of the program as the Pirates look to cement a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
