McMillan & Mouzzon Accepted into US Olympic Trials
June 14, 2024 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – East Carolina track & field's Sydni McMillan and Melicia Mouzzon have been accepted into the 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at Hayward Field on June 21-30.
Â
McMillan is set to compete at the Trials in the 100m hurdles, her signature event. The reigning American Athletic Conference Champion and NCAA Honorable Mention All-American qualified for the meet by virtue of her program record time of 13.00 seconds, set at the NCAA East First Round meet.
Â
Mouzzon is set to compete in the 100-meter dash at the Trials. The American Indoor Champion at 60m comes off of an All-Conference outdoor campaign which saw her narrowly miss a trip to the NCAA Championships, finishing 15th in the 100—but now Mouzzon will get her trip to Eugene anyway, qualifying on the strength of her 11.29 second result from the NCAA East First Round meet.
Â
"This is a testament to faith, belief, and adherence to the same," said ECU sprints coach Udon Cheek. "Records fell all year long for these two extraordinarily dedicated ladies because they stayed objective, and detail minded. When you lock in and believe in what you're doing, anything is possible. Sydni and Melicia love the minutia that many people overlook, and they communicate well with their coaches and the supportive staff, which has assisted them greatly in their development. Prayerfully, this blessing echoes within the program as a possibility for anyone that would dare to do the same. Attention to detail matters. Consistency matters. Faith matters: faith in who God had called us to be, and faith that our gifts in His hands can open doors to amazing opportunity."
Â
Neither McMillan nor Mouzzon had the "A" standard for automatic qualifying and instead came in holding minimum standards with possibility of entry if the number of automatic qualifiers was less than the field size for the event. The field size for both the 100m and 100m hurdles is set at 36 with three rounds of competition.
Â
The United States Olympic Team Trials are set to commence on June 21st at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The meet will be broadcast in part on NBC, USA Network and Peacock. For more information, head to usatf.org.
