June 05, 2024 | Baseball
TORONTO, Ontario – Former East Carolina All-American and current member of the Baltimore Orioles organization Connor Corby made his Major League Baseball debut Monday evening, playing second base and batting ninth in the Orioles' 7-2 win at Toronto.
Â
He is the first Pirate to earn the call to the Majors since Alec Burleson debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals back on Sept. 8, 2022.
Â
Norby was 0-for-3 in Monday's contest but registered his first career MLB hit with a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning in Tuesday's 10-1 Baltimore victory.
Â
Playing for the Norfolk Tides before his promotion to the big leagues, Norby hit .293 in 198 games over the 2022, 2023 and 2024 seasons. He also logged 153 runs scored, 406 total bases, 59 doubles, four triples and 34 home runs. Norby led the Tides to the 2023 Triple A National Title as Norfolk defeated the Oklahoma City Dodgers 7-6 at the Las Vegas Ballpark. He was drafted by the Orioles with the 41st pick in the second round of the 2021 MLB First Year Player Draft – the fifth-highest selection in program history.
Â
A three-year standout at East Carolina, Norby compiled a .392 career batting average with 17 home runs and 67 RBI from 2019-21. He was tabbed to six All-America Teams as a junior, garnering first-team selections by the America Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), Baseball America and D1Baseball as well as second-team recognition from Collegiate Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Perfect Game. Norby also won the 2021 Bobby Bragan Slugger of the Year and was a semifinalist for both the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy while being named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Year and the NCBWA District IV Player of the Year.
Â
At the time of his departure from the program, Norby ranked among the single-season leaders (top 10) in hits (third/102), batting average (fourth/.415), total bases (seventh/162) and runs (t9th/64). He helped the Pirates to 104 wins over three years, two NCAA Greenville Regional titles and a pair of AAC regular season championships.
