
ECU Swept By Marquette In Non-Conference Finale

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – East Carolina closed out its week of matches versus stout competition with a 3-0 (14-25, 17-25, 23-25) loss to Marquette Saturday afternoon inside Fitzgerald Field House.

The Golden Eagles (4-4), receiving the most votes of any non-ranked team in the current AVCA Top 25 Poll, were particularly sharp on offense – committing just eight attacking errors in 90 attempts with 45 kills to hit .411 for the day. The Pirates (7-3) fired at a .133 clip with 31 kills.

Angeles Alderete and Carlia Northcross paced ECU with five kills apiece while Jenna Rietsma put down 11 kills with no errors on 15 swings to finish at a sizzling .733 efficiency. Yadhira Anchante also posted a double-double of 34 assists and 12 kills for the Golden Eagle side.

Set One: The teams fought to a 9-9 deadlock in the opener before a 3-0 Marquette run prompted an early Pirate timeout. The Golden Eagles would extend their lead to as much as 19-11 before closing out the frame.

Set Two: East Carolina fell behind 12-3 to begin the second stanza and could not recover as Marquette eventually won the set by eight to grab a 2-0 match advantage at the intermission.

Set Three: A kill by Fran McBride gave the Pirates an 11-10 edge in third, but the Golden Eagles scored eight of the next nine points to forge ahead 18-12. ECU rallied all the way back to assume a 23-22 lead following a Northcross ace. However, Carsen Murray notched three-straight kills to help Marquette fend the Pirates off and seal the Golden Eagle victory.
