GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women's basketball team is set to travel to Birmingham, Ala. on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. meeting with the UAB Blazers. The game will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
Last Time Out
The Pirates jumped out to a 6-0 lead but never matched that margin again in a contest with Memphis which saw five ties and five lead changes on the road on Saturday. Unfortunately, for the visitors, it was Memphis who closed the game strong, leading by as many as 15 points down the stretch thanks for a 21-11 third quarter and an impressive team outing which saw eight made threes and 18 forced turnovers for the Pirates' foe. Anzhané Hutton did post 20 points and seven rebounds for ECU, but the points weren't there elsewhere to overcome the Tigers.
Scouting UAB
The Blazers enter the game at 14-8 with an even 5-5 mark in conference play after falling on the road against Tulane last time out. For the year, Maddie Walsh and Journey Armstead both score in double figures with 12.6 and 11.2 per game while Jade Weathersby averages near a double double at 9.0 points and 9.2 rebounds per game for a team which shoots the ball very well at over 40 percent from the field but struggles a tad on the boards with a -1.3 margin.
Series History
The Pirates and Blazers have a long history thanks to their time as CUSA rivals with the total series going back to a neutral site meeting in 1979. The Pirates lead overall, 15-11, but it was UAB taking the lone meeting a year ago, 73-64, in Minges Coliseum. Maddie Walsh scored 24 points in that game to erase an excellent 16-point, 15-rebound game from Amiya Joyner.
My Oh MyMy
Joyner has now eclipsed 1,000 career points. The junior is the 26th thousand-point scorer in program history and is just the second Pirate with 1,000 points and 100-or-more blocks (Marcia Girven). She also ranks 43rd in the NCAA in double-doubles with eight this season and 60th nationally with 181 total rebounds.
