
Purple Tops Gold In Spring Game, 17-10

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina officially closed out spring practice Saturday afternoon with the playing of the Annual Purple-Gold Game inside Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium with the Purple team taking home the victory, 17-10. The scrimmage capped off the 40th Annual Pigskin Pig-Out festivities, which was sponsored by Piggly-Wiggly.

Under first-year head coach Blake Harrell, the Pirates played a four-quarter game with a running clock during the second half that lasted about 75 minutes under partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the upper 70's and wind blowing between 10-15 mph.

Raheim Jeter and the Purple team jumped out to an early 7-0 lead during its second possession when London Montgomery broke off a 70-yard run on a fourth and one up the middle for the games first score. Noah Perez added the PAT. Katin Houser, and the Gold squad responded when Everett Scott drilled a 35-yard field goal cutting the lead to 7-3. Running back Parker Jenkins highlighted the drive with a 59-yard run and an eight-yard catch setting up Scott.

Gold took the lead in the third quarter, 10-7, thanks to a 49-yard touchdown run by TJ Engleman Jr. and a successful point after try by Scott. John David Black began the drive connecting with Jason Dickerson on an 18-yard strike before Jenkins' two-yard run and another Black completion to Engleman Jr. on fourth down, setting up the score. Perez knotted the game at 10-all after connecting on a 24-yard field goal.

Cole Hodge guided Purple to the win when he threw up a pass in the endzone with Ty Johnson hauling it for the score. Scott added point after capping the scoring at 17-10. Defensively, Noah Holmes had a pair of sacks (-8 yards), while Jasiyah Robinson added a three-yard sack. Ja'Marley Riddle and Zion Wilson were created with pass breakups, while Jurnee Lattimore and TyMir Brown both had interceptions.

The Pirates will turn their attention to exams before beginning summer conditioning, which will lead up to fall camp that is set to begin the week of July 27.
