Pringle Triumphant on Day One at The American Championships
May 15, 2025 | Track & Field
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jocelyn Pringle's title in the women's hammer throw highlighted an impactful day for the East Carolina track & field team on Thursday at the 2025 American Athletic Conference Championships at Charlotte's Irwin Belk Track & Field Center.
Â
Pringle didn't need a personal best to win her hammer throw crown, but her toss of 58.11m (190-7) on her second attempt of the day ensured that any of her competitors would need one to claim the top spot on the podium. The sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla. Becomes ECU's eighth conference champion in the women's hammer throw and the second to sweep both the weight throw indoors and the hammer outdoors after Kayla Padgett (2014). Pringle is the fifth Pirate overall to earn titles in both events with Montrell Morrow (2012) and Eric Frasure (2005 & 2006) being the only two other athletes to win both in the same year.
Â
She is the fourth woman in American Athletic Conference history to win the weight and hammer throws in the same year. Annette Echikunwoke of Cincinnati is the lone competitor to do so twice, a feat Pringle will look to match next year.
Â
Pringle was joined in the finals by Lydia Simmons and A'riana Crumpler who scored points in sixth and eighth respectively.
Â
On the track, the Pirates took part in a series of preliminary rounds on Thursday, led off by the women's 1,500m in which Abrielle Schweitzer turned in a time of 4:35.19 to earn a time qualifier and advance to Saturday's final. Schweitzer's time made her the top time qualifier and seventh overall in the prelim.
Â
Into the short distances, it was no surprises for superlative rookie sprinter Kelly Ufodiama whose time of 22.81 seconds was tops in the field in the prelims by 0.58 seconds and punched her ticket to Saturday's final with ease. Though they did not advance, both Kailey Elliott, Jaidyn Ramsey and Amaya Pleas all raced to personal bests in the event.
Â
In the women's 400m hurdles, Emma Hall notched a huge PR with a time of 59.87 seconds which made her just the fourth Pirate in program history to break 60 seconds in the event. In so doing, the rookie nabbed the final time qualifier for the event final.
