SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Former East Carolina pitcher and current member of the San Francisco Giants organization Carson Whisenhunt made his Major League Baseball debut Monday evening, pitching five innings at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
Â
He is the second Pirate to earn the call up to the Majors this season, joining Zach Agnos, and fifth since 2022 when All-American Alex Burleson made his debut for the St. Louis Cardinals. Currently, ECU has five players in the big leagues with Burleson, Gavin Williams (Cleveland Guardians), Connor Norby (Miami Marlins) and Agnos (Colorado Rockies). Former Pirate catcher Clayton McCulllough is currently in his first year as the manager of the Miami Marlins.
Â
A second-round selection in 2022 (pick 66 overall), surrendered four runs on five hits in his first appearance with the Giants. He allowed runs in each of his first two innings, but he came back to retire 10 of the final 12 batters he faces and ended his night with three scoreless frames. Whisenhunt walked two, struck out three and threw 85 pitches (49 strikes) before departing the game tied at 4-all.
Â
Whisenhunt appeared in 14 games (13 starts) for the Pirates during the 2020 and 2021 seasons where he posted a 6-2 record. The lefty worked 62.0 innings allowing 31 runs (29 earned) on 51 hits with a 4.21 ERA. Over the 62.0 frames, he struck out 80 and walked just 23.
