
Alderete Hits 1,000 Career Digs in Sweeping Match Against Hampton

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The Pirates earned a historic win over Hampton University in three straight sets for their second win of the 2026 season. ECU remains the only undefeated team in the Pirate Invitational and will look to stay unbeaten tomorrow against Radford. Â
Angeles Alderete recorded six kills and six digs on the night, bringing her career totals to 1,144 kills and 1,001 digs. By reaching more than 1,000 kills and digs as a Pirate, she became just the seventh player in program history to achieve the milestone in the Pirate uniform. Â
Ellie Pate also reached a key milestone on the night, tying her career high of 20 kills in a single match; the last time she reached that mark was in 2024 during conference play against UNT. Â
SET ONE: HAMPTON 19, EAST CAROLINA 25Â
The Pirates kept a steady pace in the first, hitting .500. Pate recorded nine of her 20 kills on the night in just the first set, with Brooklyn Allison working overtime in the backline with four digs. Â
Taryn Gilreath kept up with 15 assists, as well as two block assists with Kai Bailey, with the team totaling 3.0 team blocks on the set. Â
Hampton kept high pressure on the Pirates, having a .345 hitting percentage and 14 kills, but the Pirates did not allow one service ace from the Lady Pirates

SET TWO: HAMPTON 20, EAST CAROLINA 25Â
Alderete opened set two with a 6-0 run, giving a comfortable lead to the Pirates, and kept that lead through the set. Â
Kai Bailey shined with four kills on the set, including one solo block and one block assist. Naala Kasunga made her first appearance as a Pirate, also recording her first kills of the season. Pate recorded five kills, and Alderete recorded her only ace on the night. Â
SET THREE: HAMPTON 25, EAST CAROLINA 27Â
Set three was the most competitive of the night, featuring 18 tie scores and eight lead changes, compared to none in either category in the second set. Â
Nina Edwards recorded her first two kills in the Pirate uniform, as well as a solo block. Alderete, Bailey and Huff also recorded two kills, with Pate and Gilreath recording six and three in the set. Â
Although they had no aces, the Pirates forced two service errors. Â
Going point for point towards the end, Bailey ended the back-and-forth with a true kill with an assist from Gilreath.Â
The Pirates allowed one block, compared to the nine successful team blocks for ECU. Â
The Pirates notched 48 kills and 50 digs on the night. With their streak intact, they have one more game to close out the Pirate Invitational. Â
The final match against Radford University is set for August 30 at 3:00 p.m. ET, with ECU looking to finish the tournament undefeated. Â
