Whitaker Set to Participate in MLBx: All-Star 3-on-3 Competition

DURHAM, N.C. - East Carolina's Davin Whitaker will take the stage at The Durham Bulls Athletic Park for the revamped MLBx: All-Star 3-on-3 competition.
Whitaker is the first to compete in the newly named event, following fourth-year Colby Wallace's chance to participate in the Home Run Derby X in the Summer of 2025.

ECU will compete against three ACC baseball players representing NC State, Duke, and 2026 World Series runner-up North Carolina.

"It means a lot to represent ECU," Whitaker said. "We've built a resume as a program to compete with Power Fours; it's cool to see a G5 instead of another ACC school get picked for something like this."

What is MLBx?
MLBx is a co-ed, three-versus-three baseball competition that emphasizes offense and defense equally. It's a three-inning affair, with each player getting an opportunity to hit and field. Designed to blend power, athleticism, and strategy, it gives baseball fans fun, fast-paced action.

Teams get:
• 1 point for every home run
• 1 point for every catch
• Bonus points for hitting baseballs through a center-field target positioned above the outfield fence
The team with the highest score after three innings wins.

Each of the four teams has three players: an MLB legend, an elite female player from the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL), and a collegiate baseball standout.

Each player receives one two-minute at-bat during the game.
• The team on offense hits from a custom-built stage.
• The team on defense places all three players in the outfield to try to catch the ball.
• Once the two minutes are up, teams switch sides until every player has had an at-bat.

A unique feature of MLBx is the center-field target. Batters can earn bonus points by hitting balls cleanly through a target suspended above the outfield fence.
Whitaker finished the 2026 season with a .323 batting average, leading the Pirates in home runs with 10 while posting a .982 OPS, 63 hits and a slugging percentage of 0.554. The right fielder also notched a perfect fielding percentage, with 86 putouts and one assist.
