After helping direct East Carolina’s record-setting special teams squad in 2015, David Mackie was retained on the Pirates’ staff as first-year head coach Scottie Montgomery’s defensive quality control coordinator this fall.
With Mackie’s assistance, ECU punter Worth Gregory and kickoff specialist Caleb Pratt established new school single-season standards for most boots inside the 20-yard line (32) and touchbacks (31), respectively.
Prior to his arrival in Greenville, Mackie served as wide receivers coach, defensive backs coach, director of strength and conditioning, and the special teams coordinator for Hardaway (Ga.) High School from 2010 to 2014. While serving directing Hardaway’s strength program, he earned his USA Weightlifting certification.
During his tenure both HHS and Georgia Military College, Mackie helped develop 18 players who later went on to play collegiate football at the Division I level.
Mackie graduated from the University of Georgia in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in history and followed with master’s in business administration from Troy University in 2010. He also a earned secondary history education certification from Columbus State (Ga.) University.
