Colby Bortles, who joined the East Carolina baseball program in 2021 and most recently served as the teamās volunteer assistant coach, was promoted to the role of assistant coach and hitting coach in July of 2023.

Over the last three years, Bortles has been instrumental in helping the Pirates to 137 wins, two NCAA Regional titles, three consecutive NCAA Regional appearances, a pair of Super Regional berths, three American Athletic Conference regular season championships and the 2022 AAC Tournament crown.
During the recently completed 2023 campaign, ECU tallied a program single season second-best 47 victories as well as its fourth-straight American Conference regular season championship and an appearance in the NCAA Charlottesville Regional finals.

With Bortlesā assistance, the Pirates paced the league in on base percentage (.390), runs scored (486), hits (668), RBI (445), doubles (131), walks drawn (317), total bases (1,052), sacrifice flies (35) and sacrifice bunts (37) while slotting second in batting average (.292) and triples (14). East Carolina also set the conference single-season record for runs scored, hits, RBI and walks drawn while ranking 16th nationally in sacrifice flies, 17th nationally in hits, 25th in doubles, 26th in runs scored and 30th in sacrifice bunts and walks drawn.
Prior to coming to Greenville in January of 2021, Bortles served as the volunteer assistant coach at Charleston Southern following the 2020 season. While at CSU, he worked with the Buccaneer hitters and infielders on a daily basis.

As an assistant hitting coach at Rollins College from June 2019 to February 2020, Bortles controlled the in-game hitting approach with the offense as well as the outfield defensive alignment. Prior to jumping into the coaching ranks, he spent three years in the Detroit Tigersā organization (2017-19) after being selected in the 22nd round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft.
A four-year lettermen at Ole Miss from 2014-17, Bortles finished his career ranked 10th in program history with 153 RBI. He appeared in 213 games, making 184 starts, while batting .271 (184 hits) with 27 home runs, 43 doubles and scored 108 runs. He helped the Rebels tally 153 wins over a four-year period (64 in Southeastern Conference play), appeared in three NCAA Regionals (2014-16) and the 2014 College World Series.

A Deanās List member, Bortles earned his bachelor of science degree from Ole Miss in criminal justice in May of 2017 with a minor in parks and recreation.
