Dan Roszel, who possesses 19 years of collegiate coaching experience, completed his ninth season on the ECU baseball staff as the pitching coach, a position he originally accepted on July 8, 2010.
Â
During his nine-year tenure with the Pirates, Roszel has mentored one of the top pitching staffs in the country, which has included 14 Major League Draft picks, nine All-America and 19 all-conference selections, as well as helping ECU to 342 wins with six NCAA Regional appearances (2011-12, 2015-16, 2018-19).
Â
Since coming to ECU, Roszel’s staffs have consistently ranked among the national leaders (Top 50) in seven of the last nine years with regard to ERA, which included a 2.67 mark in 2011 that stood seventh. His 2019 staff led The American in eight stat categories including wins (47), strikeouts (595), innings pitched (577.2), shutouts (six) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.79), while ranking second in the AAC in ERA (3.96) and WHIP (1.32). The Pirates set the AAC record for league wins (20), hosted the 2019 NCAA Greenville Regional and advanced to the Louisville Super Regional.
Â
Junior Jake Agnos, who was named to six All-America squads in 2019, set ECU’s and The American’s single-season strikeout record fanning 145 while walking 43 in 102.0 innings. The 2019 AAC Pitcher-of-the-Year and fourth-round MLB selection by the New York Yankees posted an 11-3 overall record with a 2.29 ERA and claimed the school and league pitching crown. He also set the league career strikeout record during the opening game of the Louisville Super Regional (295) with his five versus the Cardinals surpassing Houston's Seth Romero (2015-17).
Â
Sophomore Jake Kuchmaner, who tossed the 28th perfect game in D1 history on March 17, 2019 against Maryland, earned first-team All-AAC honors after appearing in 17 games (14 starts) where he sported a 7-2 ledger with a 2.99 ERA. Classmate Alec Burleson, who is regarded as one of the top two-way players in the country and a member of the 2019 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, was named to five All-America squads (all first-team). He appeared in 24 games (nine starts) posting a 6-2 record with five saves and a 3.28 ERA.
Â
Two years ago, the Pirates led The American in walks allowed per nine innings (2.79) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.83), while ranking second in the AAC and 17th nationally in ERA (3.41) and WHIP (1.25) in 2018.
Â
Junior Chris Holba, who was drafted in the 11th round by the St. Louis Cardinals, led the staff posting a 9-1 record in 15 outings with a 2.99 ERA earning third-team All-America (NCBWA) and first-team All-AAC (unanimous) honors. Agnos (4-4, 4.10 ERA), Trey Benton (4-5, 3.13 ERA) and second-team All-AAC pick Tyler Smith (7-1, 1.78 ERA) along with Freshman All-America selection Burleson (5-2, 4 saves, 3.33 ERA) helped the Pirates post the most wins in The American (44), claimed their second AAC Tournament Title in the last four years (other 2015) and hosted its second on campus NCAA Regional as the No. 12 national seed.

Â
In 2017, ECU led The American in pickoffs (21), stood second in fewest walks (201), while ranking among the Top 4 in four other statistical categories. Despite injuries to the weekend rotation, Roszel got a chance to see the Pirates’ future as the freshmen trio of Agnos, Benton and Smith logged some key innings in 2017. Agnos, who earned all-tournament honors following his seven-shutout innings against No. 23 UCF in semifinal round action, posted a 3-3 record with a 3.22 ERA in 16 appearances (10 starts). Benton started 14 games in the weekend rotation sporting a 3-4 ledger with a 4.18 ERA and stood among The American leaders in five statistical categories. The lefty closed out his career going 20-8 with a 3.00 ERA and ranked among ECU’s all-time leaders (Top 20) in wins, innings pitched (273.1) and strikeouts (216). Holba appeared in 14 contests making six starts and tied for the team led with four wins. The right-hander struck out 47 while walking just eight batters in 42.2 innings of work.

Â
Williams earned First-Team All-Conference USA honors after going 11-3 with seven saves in 32 appearances and was selected in the 10th round by the Chicago Cubs. He recorded 76 strikeouts to just 11 walks ranking 11th nationally with a 6.91 strikeout-to-walk ratio, and sported a team-best 1.81 ERA in 99.1 innings capturing the teams triple crown.
Â
Hoffman posted a 3-3 record with a 2.94 ERA in 10 starts before being sidelined with a season injury following a career-best 16 strikeouts against Middle Tennessee (April 17), which earned him Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week, Louisville Slugger National Player-of-the-Week and NCBWA Pitcher-of-the-Week honors. Reynolds took home first-team all-conference accolade after leading the league in saves (14) to go along with a 3-2 ledger and a 2.92 ERA in 28 appearances.
Â
After losing five hurlers from the 2011 squad, which included two-thirds of its weekend rotation, Roszel put together another solid staff that ranked 43rd nationally in ERA (3.35) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.41) in 2012, while also ranking in the Top 50 in three other categories. Andy Smithmyer (1.92) and Kevin Brandt (2.12) ranked 13th and 32nd nationally in ERA, while Tyler Joyner ranked 18th in the country in walks allowed per nine innings (1.17) and 21st in strikeout-to-walk ratio (5.67).
