Karlie Abbott, who turned in an award-winning career as a student-athlete on and off the field, was named to the East Carolina University Office of Student Development staff as an academic coordinator in October of 2021.
Her appointment at ECU, which includes providing academic guidance for the Pirates' nationally-ranked baseball program, followed a field hockey coaching stint at The John Carroll School in Bel Air, Md.
Abbott spent the previous two years serving as a graduate assistant and mentor within East Carolina's Student Development Office while completing requirements for her master's degree. In addition to working closely with the men's basketball team, recruiting tutors and accountability partners to work with student-athletes, especially those in need, she also was a teaching assistant where she co-instructed an undergraduate course.
Prior to her arrival in Greenville, Abbott was a two-time All-Conference Carolinas selection as a lacrosse standout and an Academic All-America honoree at the University of Mount Olive (N.C.). The team captain also served as the lacrosse team's representative on UMO's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and was a member of the Psi Chi Honors Society. While earning her bachelor's degree in psychology in 2019, Abbott was an intern at the Caswell Developmental Center in Kinston working with patients diagnosed with severe autism.
Community service has always been a passion for Abbott, who has volunteered countless of hours working with children at Vidant Medical Center (Greenville), Camp WholeHeart (Arapahoe, N.C.), Victory Junction (Randleman, N.C.), Fifth District Elementary School (Upperco, Md.) in addition to the Mount Olive Boys & Girls Club and local soup kitchen.
Abbott also attended and graduated from Harford (Md.) Community College with an associate degree in psychology in 2017 before obtaining her bachelor's at Mount Olive, and subsequently ECU, where she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society and earned a master's in human development and family science in 2021.
