Donovan Varner begins his second season on Scottie Montgomery’s East Carolina staff as an offensive graduate assistant coach. Â

Varner accepted the offer to return to the collegiate game after spending the four years as a football coach and teacher at Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, Fla. He was charged with facilitating workouts for over 40 student-athletes, enhance player techniques and performance, and motivating students both in the classroom and on the field. In addition, Varner served as a fitness coach and trainer for all of Gulliver Prep’s athletes, focusing on increasing speed, strength and conditioning.

Varner enjoyed an illustrious playing career as a wide receiver at Duke, earning First-Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2009 before being also cited as the Blue Devils’ top pass catcher in 2011. He was also selected to the ACC Academic Honor Roll for three consecutive years and ultimately graduated from Duke in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology, markets and management certificate.

After completing his collegiate career, Varner earned a roster position with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League as a wide receiver during the 2013 season.
