Bio
Should be in a position to experience significant playing time in the defensive secondary and possibly on special teams as a redshirt freshman in 2019 … Turned in a strong spring performance under a new coaching regime to solidify standing on the depth chart as a top reserve at free safety … Athleticism could also fuel standing as a top-tier special teams contributor … Logged a tackle during the first spring scrimmage (March 30) before adding a pair of stops and an interception (no return) in the second outing on April 6 … Closed spring work with a solo hit during the Purple-Gold Game a week later.
2018: Played in two games as a true freshman, thus was able to preserve redshirt status … Experienced special teams action against Tulane and NC State, but did not record any statistics … Also contributed preparatory role on defensive scout team while on program’s developmental roster during early portion of the season … Officially enrolled early at ECU (January) and participated with the Pirates in spring drills, although did not engage in any contact work because of an existing injury.
High School: A multi-purpose contributor on both sides of the ball at the prep level whose success was rewarded with an honorable invitation to represent North Carolina in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas All-Star Game … Earned three letters and served as team captain while playing for his father Eric Rainey … A two-time All-Piedmont Triad Conference selection … Valued as an integral part of a Cowboys program which earned a runner-up finish in the Piedmont Triad 3A Conference (5-1 record) and advanced to the second round of the NCHSAA 3A Playoffs before wrapping up an overall record of 9-4 in 2017 … As a senior quarterback, completed 28 of 71 passes for 426 yards and five touchdowns and was among team’s leading rushers with 424 yards and six scores on 51 carries … Also logged 10 receptions for 188 yards and a pair of TDs … Booked 11 tackles and netted one interception on defense … Performance of note was a 65-yard scoring run against Dudley that helped Southwest Guilford to a 34-6 win … Racked up 2,477 all-purpose yards as a junior to help Cowboys to a 7-5 record, the program’s first winning ledger since 1997 … Accounted for 1,857 yards and 14 TDs by completing 106 of 178 pass attempts (60 percent) during the 2016 campaign … Added 620 ground yards and seven scores on 67 attempts – an average of 9.3 yards per rush … Began prep career by leading junior varsity squad to the school’s first undefeated season in 17 years (2014) … Participated in the 2017 Shrine Bowl Combine during the summer … Officially committed to ECU on June 20 … Chose the Pirates over Army and several other programs.
Personal: Full name is Jaren Seon Rainey … Born at Alexandria, Va. … Son of Eric and Jecobi Rainey … Father played collegiate football at Ferrum College and Towson … A communication major … Counts Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton as a notable celebrity he’s met (during Newton’s 7-on-7 event in Charlotte).
