Matthew Oehl is in his first year at East Carolina University serving as the Director of Scouting for the Pirate football program, a position he began in February of 2024.
His appointment to the Pirates’ staff ended a one-year stint at Miami University of Ohio where he served as the assistant director of scouting for the Red Hawks. Oehl evaluated potential high school and transfer prospect while maintaining an organized board and communicating with coaches, staff and other evaluators. Other duties with the program consisted of advance scouting (week ahead opponent) and assisting with all recruiting efforts (events and visits) including junior days and official visits.
Prior to his time in Oxford, Ohio, Oehl spent a year at Wake Forest University as the player personnel/recruiting intern (2022-23) where he evaluated recruits, created highlight tapes, and maintained an organized board of players to pass to the offensive recruiting assistant. He also assisted with prospect camps inputting data after testing and aided the pro liaison with Pro Day by contacting potential NFL Personnel with relevant information.
Before his internship with the Deamon Deacons, he founded and managed The Draft Academy, a social media platform dedicated to the analysis and scouting of potential NFL prospects. Ohel scouted players individually by watching full games, highlights, NFL combine/Pro Days, and any All-Star games such as the Senior Bowl. He also created graphics using Canva for every social media post and a grading scale to help create a better image of each player.
His experience with contextualizing QB data through helped him track eight data categories for every throw of the 2022-23 seasons of Bryce Young, CJ Stroud, Anthony Richardson, and Will Levis. He created a category to track on-target percentage for each individual category and a ball placement score that tallies every attempt of the season on a 0-2 scale to get an overall ball placement score. The contextualized data is used to create a better picture of each QB using stats and data.
A graduate of St. John’s University in 2020, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in sports management with a minor in business. A four-year member of the Red Storm lacrosse team, Oehl appeared in 45 career games making 15 starts as an attacker. He tallied 60 career points (10 goals, 50 assists) netting his first career goal against Drexel on March 18, 2017.
