Charles Welch, a 2007 East Carolina University alum, was hired as assistant director of athletics media relations on October 26, 2015 before earning a promotion to associate director status in March of 2022.
In his current role, Welch oversees all media and public relations aspects for the Pirate baseball, volleyball and women's tennis programs while executing an additional role as the secondary contact for the football team.
The appointment marks a return to the ECU Athletics staff for Welch, who held a similar position from 2008 until 2012, before spending three years assisting the communications division at UNC Greensboro.
While with the Spartans, beginning in August of 2012, Welch served as the primary public relations contact for the women’s basketball, baseball and volleyball programs, preparing digital guides, game notes and fulfilling internal and external media requests. During the 2012-13 season, he directed the promotion of All-America baseball selection Christian Wolfe and 2012-13 Southern Conference Women’s Basketball Freshman-of-the-Year Lucy Mason.
Welch began his career in the field as an undergraduate student assistant at ECU from 2005 to 2007 before being elevated to the title of staff assistant for the 2007-08 season. In August, 2008 he was promoted into a full-time role and assumed primary duties with the Pirates’ women’s basketball, volleyball and track teams.
Welch earned his bachelor’s degree in communications at East Carolina in 2007. He is a member of CoSIDA.
